About AITSL

Learn about who we are and what we do to support and promote excellence in the Australian teaching profession.

Who we are

The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) is a for-purpose organisation. We are dedicated to supporting teachers and leaders to have the maximum impact on Australia’s children and young people.

We develop and maintain resources for teachers and leaders, create frameworks and guidelines for educational institutions, and provide advice for government.

Our work is guided by the profession. We have established clear and effective frameworks for undertaking genuine national consultation and collaboration. These frameworks involve teachers, leaders in schools and early childhood education settings, representatives from government systems, Catholic and independent school sectors, teacher regulatory authorities, initial teacher education providers, teacher unions, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and groups, principal and other professional associations, and community organisations.

Australia’s national Teacher Standards, developed with the profession, have been embedded in the Australian education system since 2011.

AITSL was formed to provide national leadership for the Commonwealth, state, and territory governments in promoting excellence in the profession of teaching and school leadership with funding provided by the Australian Government.

Our vision
Australia has a high-quality education system in which teachers and leaders have the greatest impact on the educational growth and achievement of every learner.
Our mission
Promoting excellence so that teachers and leaders have the maximum impact on learning in all Australian schools and early childhood settings.
Our reach
We work at both a national and jurisdiction level, supporting quality teaching and leadership wherever a school is located.

What AITSL does

AITSL connects research, policy and practice to support:

  • High-quality teaching

  • Effective leadership

  • National tools and standards

Our work is evidence-informed and developed in collaboration with the profession. We create practical resources that make a difference in real classrooms and other education settings.

Teachers and leaders may recognise some of the tools and resources on our site, including the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, the Teacher self-assessment tool, and the Indigenous cultural responsiveness self-reflection tool

As well as producing practical resources for teachers and leaders, AITSL has also developed national frameworks that have been endorsed by all Education Ministers. We also work to advocate for teachers and leaders in policy and initiatives.

AITSL has a research arm that provides the only national picture of teacher workforce data in the country. Reports are produced regularly to help governments, the media and the public understand the challenges facing the profession. We also produce research longreads on topics like classroom management, wellbeing and parent engagement.

We are a small organisation, made up of people passionate about supporting Australia’s teachers and leaders.
