Application process

Find a step by step process for applying for a skills assessment to migrate to Australia as a teacher.

From 7 September 2026, the AITSL skilled migration fees will change. Please refer to our fees page for more information. AITSL is currently assessing applications received in the week of 20 July 2026. Please note that we do not take phone queries and do not respond to requests for updates.

Before you start

Before applying for a teacher skills assessment please check with the  Department of Home Affairs that the visa you’re applying for requires a skills assessment. 

The skills assessment confirms you have the required qualifications and English language proficiency for your nominated occupation. All applications will be assessed against a qualifications and English language proficiency criteria, and you must meet both for a successful outcome. 

Application process for a skills assessment

Step 1

Check that you meet both criteria

You must complete a minimum of 4 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) study at university level that results in qualification/s and includes a relevant initial teacher education qualification. Please see Step 3 for the specific criteria for your occupation. 

Our skills assessment includes an English language requirement that can be met either through a study option or with a suitable Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Test Report Form (TRF).

Read the Applicant Portal User Guide  for steps on how to use the portal to submit your application.

Step 6

Submit your application

The majority of assessment-ready applications are completed within 4 weeks, some may take up to 6 weeks to complete. If an application is incomplete or there are incorrect documents, this will delay the processing of your application. AITSL does not respond to status update requests via phone or email.

Step 7

Your assessment outcome

Most assessment-ready applications are completed within 4 weeks, some may take up to 6 weeks to complete. AITSL is experiencing a significant increase in application numbers and these estimated timeframes may be extended. If an application is incomplete or there are incorrect documents, this will delay the processing of your application. 

A notification email will be sent via the Applicant Portal when your assessment has been completed.  
Step 8

Optional – request a Skilled Employment Statement (SES)

A Skilled Employment Statement (SES) is an optional summary of your relevant skilled employment which you can use as part of the Points Test for skilled migration. After you have received a Skills Assessment Certificate from us, you will be eligible to request a SES.
